I'm interested in checking out some of his other bands (Gothic Archies, The 6ths, Future Bible Heroes, etc.). Any suggestions on a particular album that I should start with?

Re: Other Stephen Merritt recommendations?
Mon, January 19, 2004 - 11:30 PMOoh! The 6ths is a wonderful mock "tribute" band for Stephin Merritt, so you will hear a lot of other artists. The first album seems more popular, but I thought the second (Hyacinths and Thistles) delicate and subtle.
Probably more like Magnetic Fields is Future Bible Heroes. Both albums are ace, but I actually suggest you find the Lonely Days EP. It has a gorgeous dance cover of the old Love Is Blue, and a very pretty instrumental, Berlin on $10 a Day. The 1st album, Memories of Love, has perhaps my favorite Merritt song, You Steal the Scene. But it's all good, if you are a Magnetic Fields fan you would love all of these.
Gothic Archies, I think, is the least necessary to own at this point. There's just one EP out, so it's anyone's guess how a real album would turn out.
You should really treat all his projects like Magnetic Fields. The only reason he has all these projects going is that he has a lot of energy to release albums, more than any single record company can handle at once. The projects are different, because they involve different colaborations, but easily can be seen to work as a whole. Steve is Steve.

Sat, January 24, 2004 - 6:44 AMI didn't like H and C by the 6ths, but I loved the other
album. I also love the Future Bible Hero albums.
I'm curious about the Gothic Archies. -

Re: Other Stephen Merritt recommendations?
Tue, January 27, 2004 - 3:22 PMMy take is that the Gothic Archies was a total letdown. Sounded like a great idea for a band and I love the name, but the music didn't speak to me at all.
Keep in mind this is coming from a guy who thinks 69 love songs is the greatest pop record of all time. I would highly recommend memories of love by the Future Bible Heroes; wasn't too taken by the other FBH records. The 6ths are good, but not what I would consider particularly inspired. I was really let down by Merritt's Eban & Charley soundtrack.
Any idea when a new Magnetic Fields album is coming out? -

Someone in the Magnetic Fields tribe (oh, sorry, "community") on Orkut said it would be this spring. Supposedly they had an advance copy, even.

Mon, April 26, 2004 - 7:48 PMThank god!
Just for the record, I like the H and C Sixths album and didn't like the first. And I listened to them in that order.

Re: Other Stephen Merritt recommendations?
Tue, April 13, 2004 - 9:25 PMThe Gothic Archies are enjoyable if you don't take them as seriously as his other bands. There's an element of dark silliness to the music--a song called "The Abandoned Castle Of My Soul"? He's totally kidding. I'm laughing with him.
